Body Scan Meditation — What Is Actually Happening

A body scan is not relaxation. It is the deliberate redirection of conscious attention inward — and the research on what that does to the brain and body is more interesting than the practice sounds.

The Mechanism

Attention directed inward changes what the body does

The autonomic nervous system shifts into its parasympathetic branch — the rest, repair, and integration mode — only when it perceives safety. Safety is not a thought. It is signaled by the body. Stillness is the primary signal. When the conscious mind stops generating motion and directs attention inward to the body, the nervous system receives the signal that there is no immediate threat. The parasympathetic response activates. Cortisol drops. The immune system comes back online. The heart's electromagnetic field begins to synchronize with cerebral rhythms.

Denis Noble's research on top-down causation in biological organisms showed that organism-level coherence depends on parts subordinating local activity to the whole. The body scan is that process made voluntary — the conscious mind taking its proper position in the system and allowing the system to integrate.
