Panentheism is not pantheism and it is not classical theism. It is the position that the universe exists within God while God infinitely exceeds the universe — and Infinitely Simple demonstrates that this is precisely what logic and evidence require.
Pantheism holds that God is identical to the universe — the sum total of all that exists. This collapses the distinction between the necessary ground and derived existence. It cannot explain why derived things exist.
Classical theism (in its most extreme form) holds that God is entirely external to the universe. This has difficulty explaining divine immanence and the fact that creatures moment by moment depend on a continuous sustaining act.
Panentheism holds that the universe exists within God while God infinitely exceeds it. Creatures are sustained within divine activity at every moment — genuinely other than God while genuinely inseparable from God. The relationship is asymmetric: God does not need creatures. Creatures are entirely dependent on God.
Level 1 — Essence: The infinite, necessary, self-subsistent ground. Unknowable Mystery. Source from which everything derives.
Level 2 — The Logos / Operations: Essence expressed relationally as Life, Consciousness, Love, Intelligence, Will. The macrocosm.
Level 3 — Creation: Creatures. Derived realities sustained within God's activity. Genuinely other than God. Microcosms of the Logos through structural correspondence.
The Container Principle establishes that the necessary ground must possess Life, Consciousness, Love, Intelligence, and Will. But the ground cannot be identical to its expressions (pantheism fails) and cannot be utterly separate from what it grounds (the sustaining relationship is continuous). The only coherent position is panentheism.
What is panentheism?
Panentheism holds that God contains the universe but infinitely exceeds it. Unlike pantheism (God IS the universe), panentheism holds that God encompasses and permeates the universe while infinitely transcending it. Unlike classical theism (God entirely external), panentheism holds that creatures exist within God, sustained by God, genuinely expressive of God — while remaining genuinely other than God.
What is the difference between pantheism and panentheism?
Pantheism: God is identical to the universe. Nothing beyond. Panentheism: God contains the universe but infinitely exceeds it. Creatures are genuinely sustained by and expressive of God, but God is not exhausted by creation. The distinction is structural: in pantheism, creatures are God fully; in panentheism, creatures derive from and express God while God infinitely exceeds every creaturely expression.
Is Christianity panentheistic?
Many Christian theologians argue panentheism is more consistent with Christian theology than classical theism. Acts 17:28 — 'in him we live and move and have our being' — is more naturally panentheistic. Ephesians 4:6 — 'above all, through all, and in all' — likewise. Infinitely Simple derives panentheism from first principles without these biblical references, arriving at the same structure through logic and evidence.
What is Christian panentheism?
Christian panentheism holds that God is the infinite necessary ground from which all existence derives; that the Logos is the macrocosm of which creatures are microcosms through structural correspondence; and that creatures are genuinely other than God while genuinely inseparable from God. This is the framework Infinitely Simple derives from logic and evidence.
